Catch a Falling Star (2000)

An overindulged actress storms off the set of her latest film and is surprised to find fulfilment away from Hollywood. Discovering true friendship among the inhabitants of a small town, she realises that there was always something missing from her glamorous film-star life. -WWW

CAST:

Sydney Clarke - Sela Ward/ Ben - John Slattery/ Fran - Jane Curtin /Joyce - Rebecca Jenkins /Ryan - Andrew Jackson /Harry - Carlo Rota /Pete - Vince Corazza /Carter Hale - Nigel Bennett

With: Rhonda McLean, Cliff Saunders, Kathryn MacLellan, Karl Pruner, Dave Nichols, Brock Ward, Leslie Carlson.

The "Falling Star" in this movie is Sydney Clark, played Ward. She's so bitchy at the start of the movie, so when her fiancé cheats on her, you would wonder if he is only using her or something.

John Slattery's character, Ben, has some "sweet" arrogance while flirting with "Peaches" at the Bowling Alley, but his eyes glow with love.

Sela Ward's character, Sydney, blushed and glowed whenever Ben was around, so that's a good sign.

Let's not talk about how bad the script is because I have no right. Leave it to the critics. Besides, it's not all that bad.  There's a heartbreaking scene at the Lincoln Train Station.

Thought bubbles appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the movie towards the end:💭 What happened to the guy at the train station?  💭Did he become her friend? What was the purpose of that scene? 💭What made her stay?

No matter how heartbreaking that scene was, it seemed to have no integration of any sort to the other things happening in the movie, except for making her stay.  My guess is, New England became "home" to her?  Is that it?  Is my mind so addled that I couldn't get it?

I get how Ryan(Andrew Jackson, the actor) could be physically attractive, but Carter, Joyce's philandering boyfriend, I don't get at all.

Sorry about that.  Those two are a-holes in the movie and the description only pertains to the movie.

From Amazon.com

There were good moments between Ben and Sydney...The scenes of Sydney and Joyce (who is a natural, by the way) were good because it looked like they are really friends, but Jane Curtain is the best actress in this movie.

Carlo Rota did okay.  The steel mill workers?  They seemed like good people who just want to earn an honest living, so I guess they were believable enough.

The voice on the answering machine didn't seem human.  Did they use a synthesiser or something? I don't know.

No matter what the critics say(I read them after watching the film...some even agree with me that Jane Curtin is the most natural here.), I enjoyed watching this movie.  There's something about Sydney and Ben.  For me, they look like they are really in love in the film.

I guess that's it.
