Six Days Seven Nights (1998)

Image
(After Quinn whispers to Robin's ear his age)  Robin Monroe : You still look good. Quinn Harris : I still AM good.  Sigh. I don't even care if critics liked this or not.  I simply love this movie because it reminds me to keep my head above the water.  The love angle between Quinn and Robin gives me cheap thrills and the action scenes are also quite exciting and my favorite is their cliff jump. When this movie was shown, if I am not mistaken, Anne Heche and Ellen Degeneres were still an item, but she made me believe that she preferred men here.  Eventually she did change her preference(she has gotten married to Coleman Laffoon, has a son named Homer and before their marriage was absolutely dissolved in 2009, she fell in love with James Tupper.  They now have a son named Atlas), but she sure was convincing as Robin here when she was still a lesbian.  Read Anne's Wikipedia page to understand her even just a bit. Wha...

Third Person (2013 Toronto Film Festival) R-16

Image
(Sorry, but I cannot write about this film without some spoilers) We were only four people in the cinema and all of us knew each other. Why? Because I watched it with my mom, my dad and my younger brother. It was always pretty awkward watching a restricted film with my parents in a public  theater, so I was feeling a bit iffy, but I don't think I would have it any other way.  After all, we were all adults.  My dad's in his late 70's, my mom's in her mid 70s, plus my brother and I were both in our 40's so I guess it was perfectly alright. The movie had a good way of interlocking the stories, but there were many, many goofs.   Like how would someone in New York bump into someone in Paris? This was not a story about portals or sliding doors.  It's a story about Michael( Neeson ), a very successful writer who is estranged with his wife Elaine( Bassinger ) with a very young up and coming beautiful and sexy journalist called Anna( Wilde ) as...

The Sound of Music (Different versions)

Image
( source ) Real/Reel I never get tired of the Silver Screen version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, but I also have learned to love the Japanese version called  Trapp Family Story(a.k.a. Trapp Family Singers)トラップ一家物語 Torappu Ikka Monogatari . The Sound of Music 1965 version was cut short and more cinematic.  The Japanese version was well researched, still added some fictional parts, but tried its best to be somewhat like a docu-film, anime style.  The names in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and movie were like aliases, while the Torappu Ikka Monogatari used the real names of the seven(7) Von Trapp children from Captain Georg 's first marriage.  It may have been presented in animated form, but it was real as real could be.   The SOUND OF MUSIC is timeless.  I have watched this countless times, and like what I said before, I never get tired of it. I'm really a sucker for these types of stories.  For some weird reason, when I was a l...

Ghost World (2001)

source Seymour and Enid Thora Birch is someone I've seen grown up, at least via the boob tube/idiot box and the silver screen.  She is one of the greatest and most versatile actors and I admire her a lot.  It's a pity I don't get to see her much anymore because of certain controversies.  No, she did not become a wayward daughter  or anything of that sort, but...Anyways, she is still around.  I hope she would get more projects.  May the people involved realize that they need the likes of her and overlook the controversies.   Anyways, when I learned she was paired with Steve Buscemi in this movie, my wildest imagination could not fathom how they could have onscreen chemistry, at the very least.  Steve Buscemi is a very respectable actor, but I couldn't picture him being paired with Thora Birch. When I started watching this film, I brushed the fact that she was Thora and he was Steve.  I immersed myself in the story and b...

The Big Sleep (1946)

Image
Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by a rich family. Before the complex case is over, he's seen murder, blackmail, and what might be love.-i mdb This is one of my favorite movies of all time.  Philip Marlowe(Bogart) and the sultry Vivian Rutledge (Bacall) become involved with each other while the former was investigating a case that involves the latter's sister.  This movie was released in 1946 and was based on the book of the same title written by Raymond Chandler .  The screen adaptation was written by William Cuthbert Faulkner , a Nobel Prize laureate from Oxford.  He collaborated with Leigh Brackett and Jules Furthman .  I am amazed that as early as 1946, movies like this one already existed.  The scenes are moving and nail-biting.  The book was published in 1939, which makes it more interesting. The dialogue was intelligently written along with some dry humour and some really funny ones. It also makes me realise that everythi...
