Double Twisting Double Back (2018) R-16

Image
Source Written and Directed by Joseph Abello To be completely honest, and I can only speak for myself, I was very edgy and ambivalent about this movie.  I knew I was going to watch this months even before it was shown.  At least three of my friends were...are involved in this film, one way or another, so I conditioned myself, and also managed my expectations. THE VERY FIRST MOVIE ABOUT PHILIPPINE GYMNASTICS Gymnastics is not the number one sports in the country, even if we have great gymnasts who are not given a chance to hone their craft. Other countries have good training programs.  We can't always give the lame excuse that we don't have the budget for it. Our national athletes are forced to have military training.  I saw our runners train under the heat of the sun and not eat healthy food. I'm glad it was tackled in this movie. D.I.D. Dissociative identity disorder ( DID ), also known as multiple personality disorder, is a mental disorder chara...

My 2 Mommies (PG) 2018 -Graded A by the CEB

What would you do if you find out one day that you are a father to a child? Especially when you are a “mumshie”? Paolo Ballesteros showed in the movie “My 2 Mommies,” that you don't have to be a mother to be a mommy. In the movie, his character finds out that he had fathered a child with his ex-girlfriend Monique, played by Solenn Heussaff. So what’s the twist? It turns out that Ballesteros’ character is gay. Their son, Tristan, now has to deal living with two families: that of his father and his partner Ronnie, and of Monique along with her husband. A Work of a Real Genius: Bliss (R-18) 2017

Image
Never in my wildest dreams did I "see this coming".  If it were up to me, I would've watched Sandara Park's ONE STEP  or Katie Holmes' TOUCHED WITH FIRE , but instead,  I found myself watching this previously X-Rated film called BLISS  with my parents at EVIA Lifestyle Mall's Vista Cinema DOLBY Atmos Theatre and I was very impressed.  The theme is disturbing indeed, but what made it lighter was the treatment and the close to seamless acting of Audie Gemora and Michael De Mesa.  I watched this film like I was watching a tennis match so the scenes did not confuse me.  Thankfully, I didn't make a mistake which scenes were real or just inside Jane's head. While we were watching we were reminded of  Gaslight ,  Misery (which was mentioned in the film) and Satoshi Kon's  Millennium Actress (I wrote about this before, but I couldn't find it) and  Perfect Blue . When I checked online, I learned that it was indeed patte...

Just the 3 of Us (R-13) 2016

Image
note: I was able to watch great movies before this one, but for one reason or another I wasn't able to blog about them. Director: Cathy Garcia-Molina An unlikely love story between polar opposites Uno(JOHN LLOYD CRUZ) and CJ(JENNYLYN MERCADO), two strangers, and how one night changes their lives forever. Unforeseen circumstances collide and force Uno and CJ to live under the same roof as they both deal with their sense of responsibility and their yearning for security. Uno is motivated by his sense of family while CJ is governed by an unconditional love that should put her first above everything else. The unlikely thing that binds Uno and CJ together paves the way for them to find in each other the kind of love they never thought they needed. ( source ) Just the 3 of Us is a feel good romantic comedy.  Heartstrings were pulled towards the middle of the film, but it was balanced with lots of laughs, love of family, great friends, etc. The very cute neighbour, H...

A debacle with myself is what I am having.  Should I publish this is the vernacular or should I just publish this in English? I'll just let my thoughts flow.  If I think of something in the vernacular, then I would just inject it. When I was a little girl I wondered why we weren't just annexed to the US of A because a lot of my countrymen were dying to get a US Visa anyway.   My formative years were spent in the USA and I memorized "I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag..." first before I learned about the " Panatang Makabayan " so I was one of those who were complaining why we didn't remain a  Commonwealth or something. There was a time that I was even ashamed to ...

That Thing Called TADHANA (2014)

Image
Gateway Cineplex, Araneta Center Cubao There are all kinds of LOVE in this world, but never   the same LOVE twice -    F. Scott Fitzgerald The style is quite similar, but NOT the same, mind you, to the Hawke-Delpy BEFORE trilogy .  It's mostly just the two of them(Mace and Anthony as played by Angelica and JM respectively) with some bit players.  Most of the people who watched this film with us liked it, with the exception of some seniors who exclaimed, " Mabuti na lang libre! " (It's a good thing it's free!) A couple of pairs that said the line above are church leaders, so it's easy to understand that they did not like the expletives uttered by Mace and Anthony like it was the most natural thing in the world.  My parents on the other hand, loved it(the story and execution, not the expletives).   Minus those expletives and the things Mace implied in the movie, it has a great story.   Maybe the only flaw  was when Mace asked An...

10,000 Hours

Image
From imdb This movie is loosely based on the life story of former Senator Ping Lacson who is now the rehabilitation czar of the places that were slaughtered by Super Typhoon Yolanda aka Haiyan. 10,000 HOURS is an action-packed thinkers movie.  When I watched this movie, I set aside the fact  that it was based on the former senator's plight and treated it as a pure work of fiction.  Still, with a few hitches, it was as real as real could be.  The scenes in Amsterdam brought me to the edge of my seat.  It was if I was a real bystander or perhaps, a stalker, watching everything while it is happening. Probably because of the familiar places, et cetera . Yes, it was not perfect, but it deserved its best picture award compared to the other movies that are playing in this year's MMFF. Robin Padilla is not just an action star, but is also a very good actor.  He is very convincing as the young looking Senator Gabriel Alcaraz whose q...
