Wow. Banned in 1941? Probably because it was the most controversial film and play(by RONALD GOW) of that time. If this movie was shown during our time it would be PG-13. This was based on the novel of the same title by WALTER GREENWOOD. He also did the screenplay with the help of ROLLO GAMBLE and BARBARA K. EMARY. The movie was directed by JOHN BAXTER.
Although everything that happened during the Great Depression or Great Slump is indeed, well, depressing, the thing that bothered me the most was when Harry(GEOFFREY HIBBERT) won twenty-two quid, which was a lot of money that time, and asked his parents what to do, the dad(GEORGE CARNEY) said to go on a holiday. They weren't rich, so why didn't the father suggest that he save some?
It was because of that suggestion that Sally(DEBORAH KERR) was put in a bind. If the father's mind and actions were more ant like, then maybe the story of Sally's decision to be a kept woman wouldn't happen.
It was also because that holiday that Harry got his girl, Helen(JOYCE HOWARD), pregnant.
Sally's idealistic boyfriend, Larry Meath(CLIFFORD EVANS), is the political voice of reason in this story. He and Sally love each other, but they put their marriage on hold because of the worldwide situation.
Clifford Evans, in his own way, is a handsome man of twenty-nine. He looks way older than his age because of his hairstyle, but I think, except for some boys who were Harry's age, perhaps, he was the most good looking chap in this film.
What happened to Larry you might wonder? How come Sally had to be Mr. Sam Grundy(FRANK CELLIER)'s keep? Watch the movie to find out, that is if you don't mind all the sordidness and filth.
