According to Tami Maida when she was interviewed by one of the correspondents of a certain magazine that this movie is based on her life, but certain scenes were added for "drama" or cinematic excitement. HELEN HUNT who plays her gave her a different persona. She said she was more conservative than the way Ms. Hunt acted, but Ms. Hunt did spend time with her. Maybe that was how Ms. Hunt saw her. Well, I don't know.
The name of the school was changed and so was the team. Some characters, like the role of DAPHNE ZUNIGA, were combinations of different characters, but mom was mom, and dad was dad.
Now, notwithstanding those alternative facts, so-to-speak, the movie was good. It did show that women could play a male dominated sport, if given a chance, and jocks could treat a lady good, as well as treat her as one of the boys too.
I was deeply touched when her teammates bought her the gown she wore to the big even because it meant that they respected her as a player, but also saw that she's a beautiful woman.
I don't know how it started... when it was instilled in us women that we are the weaker sex(most of us are frail, but...), but there were women in history who were also strong, no matter how few they were. History is written by the victors, so do we know that it has always been this way or not?
At any rate, she paved the way for women who didn't have to be burly to be great athletes, and that that they did not have to lose their femininity to be such.
