Same Time Next Week(2017) with some notes on a production of They're Playing Our Song
This is such a beautiful story about dealing with grief and so much more. When people we love die, a part of us dies with them. The pain would be lesser as the days go by, but they will always have special places in our hearts.
Our central characters, Sarah(JEWEL STAITE) and Ryan(TRAVIS MILNE), have recently lost their respective spouses. They briefly meet when Sarah had a minor mishap, but when bump into each other in the cemetery, they have a little chat at a diner that serves very delicious pies served by the most sarcastic person on earth. Of course that's an exaggeration. Anyways, after their chat they decided to have their little support group and promised to meet at the diner the same time the following week.
I like the flow of this story. The dialogues...the conversations rather, should really be heard. We should really listen. I am sure we could learn a thing or two, even if this movie is not preachy.
There are different kinds of grief tackled in this story. One character(STEPHANIE BENNETT) was worried too much about her sister-in-law, her brother's widow, that she was kind of in denial that she was grieving too. She lost a brother, for Pete's sake!
I love the ensemble chosen for this made for TV movie. They complement each other. All of them act(ed) naturally.
THE MOVIE
How did I come across that movie? One time I was watching a nice production of THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG. I'm not sure if the actors are professionals or if it's local production, but I'm pretty sure it's a not a school musical. Anyways, even if it's not perfect because the dancing and some of the singing were kind of off, I had a good time watching it. The one playing Vernon played the piano well, and he was able to do justice to the songs he played and sang. The one playing Sonia acted well. It was a good production and wasn't a waste of time at all. You will laugh, cry, hate Leon's shadow(etc.), and would sing with the music.
The ones playing Vernon and Sonia have good chemistry.
Wait, I might forget that I'm talking about Same Time Next Week...
Anyways, after the reprise of They're Playing Our Song, the next random movie played(I'm sure the cookies helped a lot---LOL), and the rest is history.
